Article source: ONL Arquitectura This project arose in answer to the requirements of the basic guidelines established in a specific modification to the local development framework. The brief was to replace the homes which had been expropriated to enlarge the Trade Fair Area (Pavilions 5 and 7). The new homes will be located facing Ciencias Street, and the objective is to create an internal space which will be protected by the new pavilions and the multifamily apartment block.
The decisions made with regard to design and form are as follows: In line with the planning proposal of the local development framework, to build 5 apartment blocks separated by 3-metre passages to create a structured layout for the buildings. To have the apartment-block ground floors run in a continuous line along the street to devote the maximum amount of space possible to commercial activities, and create a visual and sound barrier to protect the interior garden. To adjust the typologies so that all the kitchens and living rooms have a south orientation. To make the street façades more formal and imposing, and the interior façades more informal and domestic. The building design incorporates all these objectives. The day areas have an exterior with a light skin and open spaces, while the night areas have a more isotropic and solid exterior. This solution also means that the external appearance of the buildings changes throughout the day and with the seasons. All these aspects give the buildings a very modern urban character, in keeping with our intentions, and means that they are completely in harmony with the surrounding environment, not only in terms of appearance but also the building systems used.
