Jose Luis Martinez Library in Mexico City, Mexico by Alejandro Sanchez Garcia Arquitectos
The Jose Luis Martinez Library is part of the Ciudadela: City of Books in Mexico City, a project that sought to restore and refurbish a 200 year-old cultural landmark. The main features include a theater, personal book collections and libraries, children’s libraries, and an exhibition gallery. The Ciudadela: City of Books is to be completed in 2013.
The Jose Luis Martínez Library is a conceptual replica of the diplomat’s house and studio, housing over 70,000 publications. The project reveals itself sequentially on the basis of two halls and a double-height mezzanine floor. A glass tower serves as a staircase and as a translucent exhibition space.
Both halls, connected at the perimeter and via both stairways, are lined in wood and bookshelves that run from floor to ceiling and generate a double reading in both vertical and horizontal directions. The steel structure, mounted on the wall, retains the essence of the original construction by omitting the ceiling. The project makes use of a low-energy consumption system and innovations in the climate control system for the preservation of the collections and the building itself.
