This was the first prize in a restricted national contest announced by the “Madrid Autonomous Region” and the Getafe Town Council. Once we had won the contest, we talked to the jury, composed of four architects. They told us the had very much liked the plan and that it bore a great resemblance to the monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial in its ground plan and size, which made it even more interesting.

Later, while we were working on the execution plan, we went to attend a chamber concert in this monastery and during the waiting time for the admission, we measured the monastery’s facades. Indeed, there were almost the same dimensions 220 m. x 220 m. in the ground floor; almost the same height, the same courtyards and the Lonja’s area was very similar to our entry square. We very much liked this resemblance; we had been there so many times, enjoying the monumental character of Juan de Herrera’s masterpiece, that we were very proud that it had got something to do with that building, even if only in the proportions.

From that moment, the desire to see this building completed increased in with true anxiety and nervous tension. Up to date, we are waiting for this to happen but, unfortunately, very often, in many contests it happens that they never get to be carried out or that they take a long time to be built.

A linear building, as the main and emblematic façade of the exhibition site, is put up. On the ground floor, the large entry hall with a single entry control will contain all the reception area’s services. The first and second floors accommodate the Conference and Exhibition Centre.

Between this building and the exhibition pavilions, there is a two level street that works to link the whole complex. In this street will be situated all the central area’s services: business premises, restaurants, public services, etc. This project proposes two 10.800 sq. m. pavilions with a net exhibition area of 5.000 sq. m. each, independent and separated by insulating rigid panels that will permit vehicles crossing for setup and dismantling.

The rectangular pavilions are divided into 30 m. x 30 m modules. One of these pavilions is designed without frames so that it can be used for cultural and sports performances. This pavilion will also have services such as dressing room, stands, etc. On the other hand, they will be united or subdivided, by using the movable acoustic panels, which can be moved all along the length of the pavilions.

Two lateral side strips define the square that completes the first and second phases, releasing two large spaces, as two court-yards,  that can be used for open air  exhibitions o sport performances. In the future, if it were necessary, the covering of these two large yards can result in increasing the number of pavilions.

The result is an image of a clear and powerful perfect square which accpommodates all the traditional needs of a gret exhibition site.  A unique and flexible exhibition site that offers the possibility of combining four large pavilions with all the required services, with different sizes, for different uses and which are completely independent. We think that is could be the best exhibition site to fulfill the demands of great sports events such as the desired designation of Madrid as Olympic Games head quarter or simply for using it as Exhibition Site.
