Sports Complex of the Royal Spanish Football federation in Las Rozas, Spain by Arquitectos AyalaMay 26th, 2013 by Sumit Singhal
Article source: Arquitectos Ayala We thought of sport fields and green spaces with some buildings near them and not of the contrary. The 120.000 m2 plot had strong vegetation and big drops sloping down to a nearby water course. The first thing we tried was to fit in the required four football grounds with the obligatory north – south orientation. The two public football grounds were placed five meters lower than the two training fields to be adapted to the plot.
A linear dressing room building divides the training fields (near the players’ residence) and the spectators’ grounds. There are two entrances: one for the people to reach the public grounds, the covered sports centre and the central office building; another private one to get access to the players’ dressing rooms the sports medicine building and the players’ residence. All the other buildings were situated in the remaining spaces inside the boundaries of the plot. It is an ensemble that has the appearance of a garden. The green fields and the vegetation sorround the constructions that though they are large blocks are camouflaged within the environements and loose their impact. R.F.E.F. HEADQUARTERS BUILDING A linear building, with a great longitudinal vestibule, goes down with ramps and stairs to obtain a mezzanine at the bottom, where the museum area is located. The length of the whole vestibule coincides with that of the main football ground. There is, near the vestibule, a lattice porch with landscaped areas between it and the main building. Underneath there it is the assembly hall and even further down the museum and the coffee shop COVERED SPORTS CENTRE In any building designed for public performances it is better to enter going down to reach one’s seat, because in the case of a mass escape towards the main entrances, the crowd of people would be less overrun if the way out is going up rather than down. The main entrance at 0.00 M. level gives access to an ambulatory that surrounds the stands. Going down till the –5.00 M. level there are two stands; in this level where the court is, there is, in the rear front, the rear gate for the players, the cleaning trucks or the ambulances. At the end of the block, in Oregon pine, another smaller wooden building inside the large one contains the service areas: backstage, toilets, VIP area, press room, etc. CHANGING ROOMS AND SPORTS MEDICINE CLINIC The changing room building is a big longitudinal block that serves the different training and public fields. This block serves as a barrier and a filter between the two parts of the project, clearly separating the public and the private spaces. At a right angle with this changing room block and with a near access to the players’ residence stands the sports medicine clinic. Close together with this last building, there is the head porter’s dwelling designed around two yards in order to obtain greater privacy. RESIDENCE OF THE NATIONAL SPANISH FOOTBALL TEAM Four blocks rise on the ground in the most private area of the plot. Two of them have mostly double rooms for the national team and the two others have four persons’ rooms for the young teams. Under these blocks, there are the commom and leisure areas facing the garden. The rooms face the best sights and enclosed on each floor, there is a private lounge to be used by the players in their free time. These residence modules have direct access to the training grounds from the garden terraces of the common areas without mixing with them. All the rooms have a big vertical window and another that is small, long and horizontal in order to be able to enjoy the sif¡ght of the mountains, even from the bed.At the end of the plot, facing these mountains’ profile, there is the open air swimming pool.
