Located within “the best golf course in Spain”, Studio RHE’s La Selva Villas at PGA Catalunya Resort in Spain are designed to merge with the surrounding 300 hectares of verdant landscape.

Perfectly situated in the major Catalonian city of Girona, the two villas are a stone’s throw away from the idyllic Costa Brava, medieval villages and the Pyrenees.

With very strong sustainability credentials through rainwater collection and grey water recirculation, for example, the new properties spearhead the way forward in designing eco homes.

Construction is set to complete for the first of the homes later this year, and the other, in early 2014. Both are designed to create the illusion of living within the forest, as broken Catalan stone walls frame the woodland and neighbouring mountains.

This rugged contour of local stone repeats, producing a strong visual design motif, while providing privacy from nearby houses. The interior living space overlooks a serene infinity pool and terrace. Green planted roofs marry with the slight undulation of the landscape, providing a space for outdoor lounging. As such, the building’s scale and impact upon its natural surroundings is minimised.

A harmonious mix of Catalonian materials and contemporary design is achieved through the contrasting ‘ancient’ wall and the villas’ striking modern form. Upon entering, visitors are treated to a dramatic and generous double-height space.

An exclusive owner’s suite is arranged as a flying ‘cantilevered’ structure. This secluded area is part of the property, yet separated and entirely private, with unrivalled views of the lush scenery and golf course below.

To overcome the Spanish heat, the villas incorporate large overhangs that provide ample shade. Simultaneously, natural cross-ventilation and high thermal mass walls with heavily insulated enclosures keep the building cool in the day. Warmth is maintained by underfloor heating and high performance double-glazing that captures low winter sunshine.
