Renovation and enlargement of a garage workshop in Arezzo, Italy by Mauro AlpiniJuly 28th, 2013 by Sumit Singhal
Article source: Mauro Alpini This project is in Arezzo historic centre, a short distance away from the Chiesa di S. Agostino on the square of the same name. The vulnerability of the situation is of total importance. The project it is part of aims to create a relationship with a place in which neighbourhood relationships will be indicators of the quality of the new element. Once again, the lessons of the historic town are of the essence.
The importance of the monument, the stratification, the relationship between lesser buildings and special buildings and its material capacity are elements which we find once again in this renovation project. The crux of the project is the building’s staircase with an austere block resting on a platform in a way which echoes the crag top locations of the Italian urban tradition while its rigid image and relationship with plaster reminds us of temples and special buildings. The main facade has two towers which complete the building lengthwise. As well as highlighting one section of the building, the central part gives us a view of the stratification of successive layers which echoes the strata of the town itself. The empty central space – obtained by means of a glass wall – resembles that of a village contrada, a street in a small town flanked by tall, imposing buildings. Externally the building seems perched on a crag once more with a series of towers along the whole length of the building which, by means of slits on the facade, allow light to enter the building. The rear of the building is more compact, like a trace of urban wall. The whole composition is in local stone laid down horizontally with vertical segments. Contact Mauro Alpini
