UNIT Architects held the opening night of their 12 week exhibition on Tuesday 16th July in the entrance space of Buro Happold’s 17 Newman Street offices as part of Buro Happold’s Emerging Architects event programme.
Emerging Architects is a series of events run by Buro Happold to promote and expose the work of some of the world’s most imaginative and engaging new architects. Currently in its sixth exhibition, the series has drawn in a diverse array of talent, and promises to go from strength to strength.

Andrew Best, Buro Happold’s Structures Group Director in London and instigator of the exhibitions, commented, “The Emerging Architects series is a great way to show off some of the upcoming talent in architecture and design. I’m really pleased with what we’ve accomplished so far and I hope that we can carry on giving new architects a platform to exhibit their inspiring work.
Ross Hutchinson, founding partner of UNIT Architects and the partner for the project, summarised their approach to the exhibition: ‘Our contribution to this series focuses on a selection of our work that shares a common approach of engagement with scale, contextual symbology, material presence and considered detailing’.

As part of the exhibition, UNIT have radically re-modelled Buro Happold’s reception; ‘Our approach to the space, and the red carpet opening night event, was inspired by the grand exhibitions of the Salon de Paris, transforming the space into an exposition of elegant splendour adorned with artwork. In clearing the space of previous obstructions, we have been able to reveal and celebrate the grandeur of the room and the original interior with a simple lining that frames the ornament of the period ceiling and provides a homogenous backdrop to our work.

Projects shown range in scale from a bike shed to the master planning of an East London urban village. The diverse typologies on display include work for St. Joseph’s Hospice in Hackney, the development of a contextual language for residential architecture in Brixton and a swing foot bridge over the Motlawa River in Gdansk.
Sponsors included Kvadrat, Tom Dixon, Pinch and Ege with the three day fit-out by GT Morgan.
The exhibition is open to the public until 11th October, Monday to Friday from 9.30 – 17.30 at Buro Happold’s London offices, 17 Newman Street W1T 1PD.
