Article source: Tiago Vieira The Alqueva water reservoir is the biggest artificial Lake of Western Europe and it’s located in the Portuguese region of Alentejo. Like most of the Portuguese countryside, the younger population of this territory is leaving and therefore the remaining population is decreasing and getting older. In the area around the Alqueva water reservoir there are several little villages and small towns, although there are a significant amount of settlements they are not strong enough to create internal or regional dynamics.
The proposal takes advantage of this new landscape element in order to create a cultural network capable of providing a new regional dynamic, uniting the populations around the lake through cultural activities. The building is a floating structure that is towed around the lake, stopping wherever it’s needed. The mobility of the building allows using a single structure to provide cultural activities to a whole region. The building is composed by four main functions, an Auditorium, Exhibition Space, Workshop Room and a Library. The auditorium is composed by several moving structures like the ground platforms, benches and control room. This allows adapting the space to several layouts. The workshop room is located in the entrance floor and is totally opened to the exterior allowing a stronger connection between people, building and territory. The Exhibition Space and Library are located in the upper floor and are illuminated through skylights and a courtyard. These rooms are intended to have temporary exhibitions that are brought to these populations by this structure while the library works as the old traveling libraries of the countryside.
