Article source: MARK DZIEWULSKI ARCHITECT Garden Park consists of four 24-unit apartment buildings and 32 townhomes surrounding an interior public park along West Sacramento’s riverfront. As the pilot project in The Bridge District, the city’s first urban core, Garden Park leverages density to catalyze walkable streets, local businesses, entrepreneurship, sustainable living, and sensible future development.
The project is urban. The facades, in material, color and design, strive to reflect a neighborhood built over time with varying character. To set the tone for the future urban core, the apartments and townhomes are built up to the street to define the edge. Rooflines are staggered and carefully articulated to emphasize variety found in successful urban areas. The focus of the neighborhood is Garden Park. As such, the main entrances face toward the park. They are identifiable and pedestrian-oriented. The townhome entry porches also face the sidewalk and the park to increase the presence of people and activity on the street. The porches will have plantings and fire pits to encourage residents to interact with the public realm of the park. These design principles are intended to enhance the pedestrian experience and character of the neighborhood. The apartments carefully consider their context. As the cornerstones of Garden Park, the buildings are playful and transparent to activate corners. Those along Riverfront Street open up to the river. They engage the water and future boardwalk. They provide a landmark from the river and invite passersby into the neighborhood. The 5th Street apartments are more vibrant and larger scaled to relate to the future urban corridor.
