Article source: Annabau The aim was to build a spacious, private residence in the eastern Uckermark in rural Brandenburg from timber construction. Small farm buildings sparsely appear in the open landscape of primarily agricultural land. For this project, we took up the theme of the lone homestead in vast space.  Image Courtesy © Annabau
 Image Courtesy © Annabau The property evolves around a paved central courtyard as an external extension to the interior living areas. Principal building and the annex are aligned longitudinally to the yard. The main residence is built as a large, central, open plan that serves as living, cooking, working, and lobby space. Zones are loosely defined by the solid sanitary block inside the open plan, containing the bathroom and guest WC.  Image Courtesy © Annabau Four separate rooms link onto this central space on the southwesterly and northeasterly fronts. The room-in-a-room plan removes the need for service corridors. The timber construction consists of glu-lam wooden trusses with a 9m span. It rests on a relatively thin base plate of 12 cm.  Image Courtesy © Annabau Thermal insulation for walls and roof is achieved with a 30cm infill layer of compressed cellulose flakes blown into cavities. The solid central core of the house consists of reinforced precast concrete filigree slabs, with their concrete infills executed in situ. Longitudinal walls and roofing are fibreboard; gable walls are clad in unplaned larch-wood planks.  Image Courtesy © Annabau Thermal efficiency takes advantage of the thermal storage capacity of the solid concrete core of the house. Additionally, the attached solid fuel masonry stove uses an ingenious system of internal fireclay-lined heat-exchange channels, which exude heat to warm the house.
