 Image Courtesy © Kubota & Bachmann Architects Appearance and disappearance The façade iscomposed out of a multitude of reflectivemetallic pixels that are attached on light structures. According to the wind direction the pixels change their orientation wherefore the building appearssomehow in constant motion. Atsome moments itmayreflect the sky, atothers the surroundingsor the park and createsthereby an impression of being a merely intangible building. From an ecological point of view the pixels serve as a windshelter. At the same time, they have the estheticalsideeffect of allowing the visitors to see the outsidethrough a lenticularscreen, causing by itsreflectionsymmetry a similareffect to a kaleidoscope. Some of the exhibition spacesbenefitfrom a ceilingfrom 4 up to 8 m heightwhichmaybeused for administration, public spaces and creativeresidences. Due to structural considerations, the mostvoluminousspaces (i.e. performance hall and conference hall) are locatedoutside the building rack.  Image Courtesy © Kubota & Bachmann Architects New Scenography / Vertical Museum The exhibition halls whoseheights are exceeding 12.5 m are as welllocatedoutside of the building rack, thoughthey dispose of a specialelevator system whose design wasinspired by the naval elevatorused for giantboats. The NCCA wouldthusbeworld’s first museum to have an exhibition spacewithin an elevator. This offersclearadvantages for the space allocation program sincethisspecial exhibition spacecan change its position in function of the respective need. It provides a high degree of flexibility and allows an unprecedentedscenography of the museumspaceorganization. Image Courtesy © Kubota & Bachmann Architects Toshihiro KUBOTA Toshihiro Kubota was born on July 20th 1976 in Ibaraki, Japan. He studied Interior Design at the Creapôle-ESDI in Paris. After his graduation in the year 2000, Toshihiro Kubota began work as a freelancer for the Ateliers Jean Nouvel. During this time he contributed to several successful projects for the Ateliers Jean Novel, winning competitions such as the Copenhagen concert hall and the Geneva CEVA 5 train station. Furthermore, his collaboration with Shigeru Ban won the competition of Metz Pompidou Centre Museum in France. It was around this time that Toshihiro Kubota and Yves Bachmann met. In 2006 Toshihiro Kubota was personally invited to participate in the second phase of the Seoul Performing Art Centre’s competition, where he came in second place. By 2007, he was promoted to design partner, working directly with Jean In 2010, Toshihiro Kubota and Yves Bachmann founded Kubota&Bachmann Architects GmBH in Zurich, Switzerland. PROFESSIONAL CAREER
 Image Courtesy © Kubota & Bachmann Architects Yves BACHMANN He studied Architecture at the University of Applied Sciences in Burgdorf where he obtained his diploma in 2001. After graduation, Yves Bachmann worked for the Ateliers Jean Nouvel in Paris. His position as a project manager included the supervision of several prestigious projects, among others assignments for the Sheikh Saoud Bin Mohammed al Thani from Qatar. It was around this time Yves Bachmann met Toshihiro Kubota. Following his time in France, Yves Bachmann co-operated with Iria Degen Interiors on projects in South Africa and Switzerland until he joined the management board of Iria Degen Interiors in 2006. During this period he was in chage of projects like the Lagoon Beach Hotel in Capetown, the Swiss railways headquarters in Zurich, the Metropol and Globus restaurants in Zurich as well as several luxury homes and apartments. In 2010, Toshihiro Kubota and Yves Bachmann founded Kubota&Bachmann Architects LCC in Zurich, Switzerland. PROFESSIONAL CAREER
 Image Courtesy © Kubota & Bachmann Architects Francisco MARTINEZ He studied Architecture at the ETSAV in Valencia and Ecole d´Architecture de Paris la Defense. Francisco started as a junior architect at Ateliers Jean Nouvel in 2000, joining the Agbar Tower project team, carrying the project from the first concept sketches to the on-site construction supervision in a 6-year time between Paris and Barcelona, ending as facade design manager and project manager for the interior design of the Agbar Tower. Francisco met Toshiiro Kubota and Yves Bachmann in Ateliers Jean Nouvel, Paris. In 2010, Francisco Martinez joined OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture, Rem Koolhaas), as a project architect, leading the Caen Library project from the concept design. After more than two years, Construction drawings are now finished, and construction is about to start. Francisco has also participated in other projects for OMA in France, as TGI PAris and recently won Ecole Centrale Paris competition.
