Article source: Fernandes Arquitetos Associados The project of Pernambuco Arena – as well as the one for other sports spaces designed by Fernandes – holds multifunctionality and sustainability as brands. Initially designed to host the soccer games of World Cup 2014, the arena built in São Lourenço da Mata, city of the metropolitan region of Recife, is ready to receive other kinds of events and contribute for developing its surroundings.
The stadium is located with great nature appeal, which area amounts to approx. 27 hectares. It provides capacity to receive up to 46,000 people. It is installed within environmental protection areas and has strategic location. It is also integrated to the World Cup City, a new urban center that houses residential, business, educational and entertainment areas that contribute for the development and expansion of Recife metropolitan region. Several devices present in the arena emphasize its sustainable feature, such as mechanisms that favor better utilization of natural ventilation and lighting; rainwater reuse and water heating systems by using solar panels installed on the rooftop; installation of photovoltaic panels for power generation by solar energy; use of recyclable materials, such as ETFE film (used by the first time in a project in Latin America), present in the entire side closure of the arena; among others.
