Article source: Diederendirrix Architects Rieteiland Oost in IJburg is an island in Amsterdam with several detached houses, most of which border onto the IJ at the rear and are closed in at the front by a collective courtyard. This residence opens onto the IJ with a view over the Diemerzeedijk. Maximum use is made of this open view by raising the living area to the bell level and putting the garaging, together with the front entrance and workroom, on the subterranean level. On the southwest side, a generous veranda facing the water extends over the complete length of the house and acts as a link between the living room and garden. The bedrooms on the top floor enjoy an open view.  Image Courtesy © Diederendirrix Architects The ceilings that run from the inside to the outside and form a canopy for the residence are striking. The brickwork of the outer facades is made up of clear orange bricks laid in varying bands. A lively display of light and shadow is produced by exposing all of the cut and uncut sides of the bricks.
