Article source: Griffin Enright Architects The site for this project is located on a cul-de-sac which creates a tapered lot manifesting in a fairly small curved front yard lot line, while the rear yard of the site opens to the canyon and city views. Two distinct conditions emerged from the design; from the rear yard the house is seen as part of a series of horizontal volumes which merge with the terrain of the landscape, while the front yard presence of the house is distinctly more urban, vertical, and formal. This dichotomy between the front and back zones of the property is emphasized by the articulation of two vertical walls that are folded into roof surfaces to create a backdrop anchoring the horizontal terrain.
The two shell like walls shift in plan to differentiate a formal entry and construct specific views of the canyon beyond. This volumetric fissure creates a two-story entry which contains the stair to the second floor bedrooms. A large opening at the landing of the stair frames the first glimpse of the canyon beyond, while a larger opening leads to the living area and reveals the expansive vista over looking the city beyond. The open living, dining, and kitchen areas are surrounded by movable glass doors that telescope open to the elongated porch.
The exterior deck and landscape are merged with the topography, creating a lap pool along the site ledge and a stair down to the landscape below. A slight shifting of the volumes from the first floor to the second floor creates large covered exterior areas while the second floor is bisected by an open court which separates the master bedroom from the children’s bedrooms. The master bedroom is positioned at the cantilevered corner of the house to maximize views both up the canyon and to the city vista, while a perimeter covered deck area creates outdoor spaces connected to the terrain of the site.
