YOUTH RESIDENCES AT AALBORG WATERFRONT in Denmark by Henning Larsen ArchitectsMarch 21st, 2014 by Sumit Singhal
Article source: Henning Larsen Architects The Aalborg waterfront will soon boast 251 new youth residences, which are currently under construction. The youth residences constitute a lively residential environment on one of the most attractive sites in Aalborg, emphasising the city’s development as it becomes one of Northern Europe’s most significant knowledge cities.
The youth residences are being built on the waterfront between the future House of Music and City Campus Aalborg, also by Henning Larsen Architects. From the harbour-facing main courtyard, residents will have direct access to City Campus Aalborg – a multi-disciplinary campus building that will house Aalborg University’s departments of Architecture & Design, Art & Technology and Media Studies among others. The building complex consists of two independent volumes. While one volume rises in a Z-shape from the centre of Aalborg to the south towards the waterfront to the north, the other volume rises from two levels on its western side to seven levels facing the House of Music to the east. The facades, materiality and physical shaping make the two building volumes appear as one architectural unit. Large openings in the facade provide residents with balcony views over the city and waterfront. The overall ambition for the area has been to create a lively urban environment where studies, leisure, work and culture come together to form a dynamic knowledge community.
