The Client (Builder by profession) wanted to develop his plot in affluent south Delhi neighbourhood as a Weekend \”Home / Farm House\”. The requirement of the client was two bedrooms with attached toilets, living room, dining room and kitchen on the ground level only. However he added a extra room with attached toilet for guest on first floor.

  • Project: Chattarpur Farm House
  • Location: Mehrauli Delhi, India
  • Site Area: 1150 Sq m
  • Constructed area: 2500 sq foots

This is a second farmhouse on his 1 acre property. The area allocated to this plot is approximately 1150 square meter. The total built up area of the house is approximately 230 square meters at two levels. The client wanted to complete the construction within six months; he wanted a simple, easy to execute design with straight lines that can be constructed in less than six months.

The House has a beautiful east facing portico overlooking the main garden also connected to the living room.

Architecture:

The house is intelligently placed on the 1150 square meter site and also the house is cleverly oriented. The house is facing the front lawn and east facing.

East facing is most desirable orientation in Indian sub-continent to achieve the maximum sun from east side. The Living room and the bedrooms are facing the east direction and the large front lawn. The eight feet wide covered portico is an open space connected to the living room and bedroom which can be used throughout the year including monsoon and evening. This space basically act as a medium to connect outside space to the inside public space.

All the services and utility space like bathrooms, Stairs, are placed west side as west is usually avoided because of the west Sun. The kitchen is facing the rear kitchen.

The House has a contemporary minimalist architecture approach.

Building Material:

The construction materials are vernacular i.e local available material. Its RCC (Reinforced cement concrete) along with ash-brick considered to be eco-friendly because of the material used. A local dark stone is used by the client outside by his own choice. However the light coloured – Indian marble is used inside. The house is painted in light beige colour.

The Project has come out well. It has been well appreciated including the clients.

If something could have been changed about the project it would be “cladding with the dark slate stone” instead of the stone used by client on “blade wall” also we would have kept the lighter flooring stone instead of dark green stone with patterns.
