Article source: Diederendirrix Architects The Activity Centre will be the heart of the Bentinckspark education and sport campus in Hoogeveen, the Netherlands. After a comprehensive selection procedure, diederendirrix was chosen as the winner. The winning design is a compact and sustainable building that fits naturally into its context. The southern side of the building will be in open connection to the new athletics track. From the sports café there are direct views of both the track and the largest sports hall. On the northern side the possibility of expansion exists, by adding units for paramedics and other functions related to education, sports, exercise and health.
On the upper floor a gallery surrounds the two sports halls and the gymnasium, allowing the spectators a great view of the athletes. The sports hall for top-level sports has permanent seating for 1.100 spectators. To facilitate larger sporting events in the future, the capacity can be increased by 2.100. The Activity Centre is being built to replace the Zwembadweg sports hall and several other gymnasiums that will be torn down. Since the Activity Centre will be the heart of the Bentinckspark education and sport campus, not only sports but also a more community-orientated programme will be made available. The planned uses of Bentinckspark suit the regional function Hoogeveen fulfils. The official opening is planned for early 2016. Contact Diederendirrix Architects
