The Cincinnati Art Museum consists of a collection of historical buildings that were added over the past century. The complex and shattered structure of the building gave cause for a thorough renovation and extension. The concept offers a museum that has clear and separate spaces, attractive to exhibit different types of art plus a pleasant working environment for all employees. The existing building presents itself in smaller “en suite” galleries that are perfect to expose paintings and other hanging exhibitions.
Design: Invited international competition | 1st Prize | 2007
DESIGN TEAM: Willem Jan Neutelings, Michiel Riedijk, Mijke Rood, Willem van Besien, Karen Glandrup, Rudolph Eilander, André van der Silk, Lutz Mürau, Kenny Tang, Rob Verheijden, Julia Söffing, Britt Pevernagie, Ulf Hackauf
The museum will also get a new entrance area that connects the existing part with the new building. The new part consists of two clearly distinguishable elements: an extensive exhibition hall and a 60 meters high tower. A huge void connects the exhibition tower to the hall that gives room to art installations, traveling exhibitions and sculptures.
The six floors of the tower offer more intimate spaces create the right atmosphere for smaller settings, where objects can be put in the center of the room. Beside that the tower guarantees spectacular views over Cincinnati and its surroundings. The new part also houses an open storage area to show the vast collection of the Cincinnati Art Museum to the public. Outside, a remarkable sculpture garden will strengthen the relationship between the city and the museum.
