The home of the Charlotte Knights, the Knights Stadium will be a state-of-the-art Minor League Ballpark located in the heart of Charlotte, NC. With a seating capacity of 10,000 and a natural grass field, it will host not only baseball games, but other events such as concerts, festivals and community events.

Wayne Brothers, Inc. secured a unique opportunity by combining the turnkey site development and turnkey concrete scopes of work into one.  The site development includes excavation, utilities and stormwater.  The concrete scope includes everything from heavy basement foundations, tunnels, retaining walls, and shored slabs, to the architectural concrete in the seating bowl.

From the beginning, Wayne Brothers knew the only course of action to complete this combined scope on a tight city block was through the use of BIM.  Both internal and external communication and coordination was key and only BIM could deliver that to the client.

The team modeled the Cast-In-Place (CIP) concrete as well as the Sitework. Wayne Brothers is managing layout with points created in Tekla Structures, and placing the points with a Trimble Robotic Total station. The management of points in the model has proven to be an extremely effective way to keep up with design changes, as well as the coordination of as-built information.

Wayne Brothers is using the CIP model and Tekla BIMsight for planning pours, tracking progress, and coordinating sequences with other trades. The team in the field has access to the Tekla BIMsight model via a twin 46 inch monitors in the field office. Not only has this proven effective in coordinating the daily work, but it has been a great tool for communication with the client. The site has limited space and a large number of trades, so coordination has been a key component to the project’s overall success.

Harris Rebar was able to use the Wayne Brothers’ concrete model to detail 100% of the projects reinforcement using Tekla Structures. This led to a level of coordination that is unheard of in traditional rebar detailing. The utilization of 3D rebar detailing with Tekla Structures resulted in fewer detailing errors, and an all-around more efficient rebar workflow. Wayne Brothers was able to use the rebar model to track rebar onsite, review areas of complexity, and manage changes to design.

The models in  Tekla BIMsight coordination model include structural steel, underground utilities, Wayne Brothers’ civil surfaces (excavation and finished grade), and Structural and Architectural design models. The ability to use these models in the office and in the field has allowed theto participate fully in the BIM coordination efforts of the client.  The BIM process has been a major contributor to this project’s success so far.
