Completed in 2013, the Windsor’s Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation has allowed Windsor’s Faculty of Engineering to distinguish itself as a leader in engineering innovation in Canada. The project is an interactive, continuously evolving tool for learning, having been built to feature a variety of structures and systems that demonstrate engineering excellence to students firsthand.

Windsor’s Centre for Engineering Innovation quite literally takes learning outside the box. While the Centre is outfitted with 80 high-tech teaching and research labs, the building’s many interactive architectural features provide hands-on applications to lessons learned inside the classroom.

The Centre features two “living” surfaces; its 20,000 square-foot living roof is equipped with measurement devices which allow students to compare the data from the green roof to that of the control sample on the regular roof, while the Centre’s interior living wall has a marked improvement on indoor air quality.

Again with education in mind, the building was constructed with different concrete and steel building materials so that students and researchers would be able to use four bridges built over the atrium to test material strain and deformation.
