Article source: Tony Owen Partners Tony Owen Partners have just completed the Focus Apartments in Parramatta, Sydney. The 15 storey tower by Merhis is Sydney’s largest fully steel framed apartment building and contains 120 units in 2 towers. The steel structure also uses lightweight Hebel floors and walls and is the first of a number of projects being developed by this group. This prototype building explores different techniques to achieve a high quality design at a lower price point. The use of steel resulted in a lower cost and faster construction.
As an affordable building, we sought to explore new ways of achieving an iconic façade within the budget. The unique façade explores the uses of new paint techniques to create a blurred effect. This blurring reflects the life and movement of the nearby freeway. Each façade responds to a different aspect of this complex urban site. The effect is a unique and vibrant façade. The ground floor contains a continuous retail street frontage and will be activated by cafes and restaurants. The majority of the units are 2 storey sky lofts. This unit type maximizes double height outdoor space and promotes natural ventilation. The project sold out very quickly and proves that a high quality and stylish environment can be achieved in any location by pushing the boundaries and exploring unusual solutions.
