Due to the exclusive texture and vivid facade, Hutong became home for cats, we try to seek and discover the new consciousness of Hutong space with the help of the cats’ senses. and the home designed for cats is an experimental way to feel the other world parallel to human’s.

One quarter-cylindrical box can be used as a spatial unit for cat shelter in the Hutong, They are distributed in the Hutong on the traditional tile roof. The boxes become the cat walk when they put in a line, and at the same time create the community space for group of cats when some of them put together.

Meanwhile, the box also helps protect the human’s house from the cats’ favorite weed, which naturally grows on the roof and decays the structure. The opened space on the box can be a roof-planter for the weed. The holes on the bottom is designed for the drainage. This green roof can work as thermal insulation for the human living underneath and protect the Hutong from urban heat island.

As well, in the real world, we can easily experience different culture in the metropolitan cities. The persistence of the single culture is not accepted on this situation. Mutual understanding is one of most important abilities these days. We believe that design should be reflected from present human activities and enclosed environment.

We  appreciate their original culture on the process of design. However, in such a multi-cultural society, the design reflected directly from classic culture is not appropriate. We would like to pursue the contemporary interpretation of their culture by challenging to apply new technology and method through the urban, architectural and interior design project.
