Article source: CVDB Arquitectos The project for the University Residence at Pólo da Ajuda – U.L. is conditioned by the requested built density, according to the programme requirements, by the limits of the site plot area and maximum given facade height. Between the Residence and the Canteen existing building it is created a public path connecting the North street, close to the Architecture Faculty, to the South street.  Image Courtesy © hugonascimento The residence is developed around a central patio, created for the students community. The building consists of three connected blocks, related to three construction phases. Each block is independent from the one to be built in the next phase. The circulation inside the building is continuous, like a “loop”, when all the construction phases are completed. The visual permeability through the central patio and interior common spaces, such as recreation and study rooms, turns the building into a less solid volume. The project is based on a modular unit, the single bedroom, to the definition of all the living and common areas. This floor is characterised by the transparencies that connect the patio, the street and their social and public life.
