RESIDENTIAL WOOD BUILDING IN SELVINO (BG-IT), Italy by CBA Camillo Botticini ArchitectFebruary 5th, 2015 by Sumit Singhal
Article source: CBA Camillo Botticini Architect Selvino is a mountain resort set in upper Val Seriana in the province of Bergamo, whose settlement is characterized by a low building density that plays in alpine version of the typical structure of the suburbs of many countries of Lombardy.
Prevalent type is a kind of reinterpretation popularized the chalet, with the house in the center of a lot of generous dimensions also surrounded by greenery. By contrast, the place was originally characterized by excellent quality of a landscape of valleys alternating reliefs very strong, which together with the vegetation of conifers gives despite the large number of houses, a character of its Equlibrio between artifice and nature. The project was born from the idea to not only change the scale of the intervention of the surroundings, incorporating more housing units, but also to evoke an Alpine character refers to homes that existed before the massive urbanization of recent decades. In this direction we have sought some constituent matrices of vernacular architecture. I refer in particular to the character of light and shade of the arcades present in valley in rural construction, the structure that draws fronts highlighting plans at different depths. The construction sees the clear-cut definition of the constituent parts of the building, where the relationship with the land is defined by a concrete plinth that solving the three-meter height difference supports the two upper floors, made entirely of wood, projecting on the north side. The intention is to make a re-reading of the stone base, while the upper part, here as in the past is full of wooden structure. The typological organization is strongly conditioned by the shape of the lot and its altitude. Also became a prevailing east-west volume to ensure overlooking the north – east and south – west being the building of a ridge that allows a wide view both sides. The system is tripartite south-west, where people access, although a canopy connects the parts and continuous northwest where a kind of frame structure detached from the lodges leads to a depth of the front of a sort of double height spaces of the two projecting surfaces. It must be said that the side exposed to the sun is less well than with open view on the valley in which it places the center of Selvino place of a valley, and then at a height considerably lower than the new intervention. The general organization of housing sees three main types caught between them. Apartments on the ground floor facing south – west with direct access from the garden, houses with access from the ground floor with the accommodation of the lower floor and three rooms with double overlooking the first floor. The stairs to the first floor overlaps the two staircases that connect the two levels of accommodation facing north – east. Altogether there are 12 apartments, with a total area of about a thousand square meters Excluding the portion dell’interrato reinforced concrete is realized a building (structure and panels) were made entirely of wood. It ‘important to emphasize the character of overall sustainability of the intervention where the entire structure, in accordance with Regulation innovative Energy Efficiency (especially face the ecological quality of materials) of the Municipality of Selvino, achieves the classification “A echo” ensuring compliance with the following parameters: use of photovoltaic solar panels, use of plant collectors for water heating, use of environmentally friendly materials, non-chemically treated with natural wood structures and fire retardant coatings of certified origin. The frames are made of wood, with triple glazing to ensure better energy efficiency, contributing to the insulation envelope and preventing heat loss. The roof is ventilated and is covered in folded sheet of aluminum, recovers rainwater for toilets and irrigation. The exterior of the house is in larch slats bolted to form a ventilated wall.
