PAUL in Paris, France by Atelier Zündel CristeaMarch 12th, 2015 by Sumit Singhal
Article source: Atelier Zündel Cristea This project located at 88 avenue Denfert Rochereauin Paris includes several works of demolition, asbestos removal and reconstruction. The Congregation of the Blind Sisters of St. Paul is mainly surrounded by religious functions and programs dedicated to healthcare. Its main access is currently possible from the avenue on the south side of the site. Our project includes a new one from the north side to facilitate the access for pedestrians, deliveries and fire services.
We see in this redevelopment a great opportunity to improve clarity and functionality in the site. Yet its human scale and its peaceful atmosphere must be maintained. To achieve a coherent result we propose a redevelopment scheme which is more like a base to start from. A framework that can evolve as the project goes on and as the users’ needs and desires change. In order to maintain the Parisian atmosphere, we chose to distinguish the built volumes in two distinct categories. They are superposed so one forms the base of the project while the other forms the attic. The base serves all the built volumes and is materialized by the regular pattern of the openings. A graphic approach of the project emphasizes on lightness, assertion of levels with horizontal concrete elements and a clever choice of materials and natural colors. As important as the built volumes, the outdoor spaces of the courtyard are considered as extensions of the project. They connect all the spaces and initiate movements through the whole site. They are designed with care and coherence. The materials which are used allow a good accessibility and an overall readability. Contact Atelier Zündel Cristea
