Frequent fliers to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol might already be familiar with the name of Privium and the benefits of membership, for the rest it can be defined as a “select way to travel” based on priority airport services, such as preferential parking, discounted valet parking, business class check-in, the preferential Privium-only route to a secure area beyond the customs checkpoint via a quick iris scan and now the much-awaited members-only lounge.
Following an international competition in November 2007, Privium Schiphol appointed the young design bureau at M+R interior architects from Eindhoven to design their highly exclusive ClubLounge located between Departure Halls 1 and 2. Once passengers have reached the “eye,” which is literally a door shaped like a pupil that opens to provide access, they are invited to experience the comforts of every imaginable travel amenity from a fully stocked bar to a Light Energy Cabin intended for battery recharging, as well as complimentary food, computer workstations and business services. The ambiance is relaxing and aesthetically pleasing to the tired traveler’s eye, no pun intended, with an all-white décor, colorful sitting areas and giant organic shapes mixed in with well-chosen design classics to set the mood.
As Privium claims, “Life’s not about the destination. It’s about the journey.” And this journey involves a stop at the lounge.
The design of the lounge
The chosen starting point for the design of the Privium ClubLounge is that we, in a low area without day light, created an environment that has no direction and no ending – only organic forms and a natural ambiance. Therefore we have transferred us in the position of a traveler to recognize what frequent travelers experience. Traveling is mostly done by transportation as a bicycle, car, bus, train, boat or airplane. Characteristic for this kind of transfer is that it is targeted with one focus point to the horizon. This goes along with an one point perspective view as a highway, railway, canal or flight destination. Also transport recourses are in that way straight and orientated in the length. This monotonous view we have broken through the organic design of the interior. The curved walls, ceiling and different raised floors give the whole surrounding a natural view and separate the space without disturbing the total ambiance. Every created part in the design has a function of its own and a different experience, this depending on the degree of concentration or interaction that fits with the chosen function; Reception and waiting area, raised floors with computer workstations and special hanging chairs, lounge area with a fireplace and easy comfortable chairs, relax area with loungers and chairs with a high individual quality easy to separate yourself, buffet area, bar area with a big floating bar with design stools, a reading table and special designed computer working station facing into the lounge area. The walls are curved and have round shaped ends with special integrated indirect lighting (led – color changes). The bar is in the middle of the room, on a higher located floor space: connecting people. The guests are on stage.
Effects
Because of the design concept that the environment needs to have a natural ambiance we have chosen for only indirect natural lighting concept. The lighting color (mood setting) changes very slowly from a little bit cool blue – sunrise- in the morning to a warm red in the evening – sunset. The colored light is indirect and fills the room with light only by reflection on the walls and ceiling – so it looks naturally. Only specific areas are lighted directly with down and up lighters to give it attention (accent). Not only light color but also smell is an important component. In special spaces different kind of flavor is used to accent the space experience. The part with bamboo and a mirror ceiling gives a feeling that the area is much higher almost an endless outdoor ambiance. M+R introduced a light energy cabin as extra feature, for uploading the battery of the frequent travelers.
