Extension – Birchlen School in Dübendorf, Switzerland by Fischer Architekten AGSeptember 12th, 2015 by Sumit Singhal
Article source: Fischer Architekten AG Competition, Dübendorf 2015; first place: By continuing the existing development pattern – four staggered elongated structures – the new building sharpens the differentiation of the outer space. It thereby enhances the existing ensemble character and gives rise to a series of sheltered schoolyards.
The flexible room layout within the new building enables use of the individual classrooms to be highly varied. As a ‘joint’ between old and new, the main staircase connects all the levels of the school building, inside and out, and provides a solution for barrier-free access. As semi-public areas, the topped music room and the library are located in the centre of the complex. Pavilion constructions are attached to the east side of the complex. The basic structures of the kindergarten remain untouched. Entrance is now via a new attached stairwell that regulates circulation and streamlines access to the classrooms.
