Competition, Zurich 2011; first place: The renovation and topping of the HPM2 laboratory building of the ETH Zurich Hönggerberg in order to transport it into a new \”life cycle\” shows that the building structure has high structural and functional qualities. A modern, contemporary and adaptable research building.

The building with its consistent grid-pattern and the clear separation of self-supporting and load-bearing components enable very good front-building \”revitalisation\”, supported by four architectural interventions: the new external appearance of the existing building; the topping with additional laboratory units, office areas and a large conference room; the new, external staircase; and the new, central lift system in the middle of both building parts (HPM1 and HPM2), which optimises access and connects the new functions on the upper levels with the entire campus.

The new facade plays with the existing proportions. The dimensions of the profiles, the ratio of the frames and filling elements and the material choice (dark and white aluminium) create a familiar picture even after the renovation work.
