Article source: OTTO MEDEM ARQUITECTURA The key element around which this project is developed is a century-old holm oak which existed on the site. The home’s necessary spaces are arranged around the tree and a courtyard, where the floor plan’s axes convergeforming a Latin cross. The public rooms are arranged in such a way thatone perceives the holm oak’s presence from any point.
Its leafy canopy inspires us to establish different heightspaces inside the home for its contemplation. As a result, we obtain a continuous space generated on the one floor, within various volumes which spatially enrich the design and act as internal light control by carefully studying the placement of voids and openings in the facades. The home’s more private rooms are further away from the public spaces, yet the courtyard remains the center and reference of the design. This home’s essence is inspired by Mediterranean Architecture and the traditional criteria on which it is based. By means of cross ventilation we have ensured that the quality of air inside the house is renewed frequently. With its porches we protected the glazed planes from the direct incidence of the sun and generated spaces in direct contact with the surrounding garden. Also, all means have been used to respect the vegetation and the environment. Its volumes, the courtyard, the existing vegetation included from the start of the design, and the care taken in each of the details during all the stages of the project, have allowed the result to be totally satisfactory, both for the client as for all of those who have beenpart of the development proces.
