This is a refurbishment and extension of a Grade II listed building in East London.

A glass extension sunken below ground level houses the dining area. This sits against the vertical garden allowing natural light to flood into the space.

A new mansard roof extension provides space for an additional master bedroom and en-suite bathroom, accessed through a sliding wooden screen.

Rich materials complement modernist furniture pieces: clay render, exposed brickwork, fair-faced concrete, exposed structural steel, matt white mosaic tiles, interwoven metallic rubber, copper ironmongery, tinted glass and Ipe wood sit comfortably next to Charles Eames, Poul Henningsen, Dieter Rams and more.

The house is a comfortable and homely yet sleek and modern space. The exposed brickwork and wood add dashes of warm colour to a minimalist palette and a new fireplace provides extra comfort to the lower ground floor.

The use of technology makes this once old building, more a home suitable for 21st century living. This includes a high performance insulation membrane that lines the ground floor wet-room, fire-glazing to the main staircase and the existing cold floor build up has been underpinned, insulated and finished with large concrete tiles heated by under-floor heating. Existing external vaults have been converted into an herb garden and a wine storage.

Donald Judd and Dan Flavin have a striking influence on some of the minimalist details which can be found throughout the house. One can also sense a deliberate Japanese aura which is a homage to one of the client’s childhood.
