Sumit Singhal loves modern architecture. He comes from a family of builders who have built more than 20 projects in the last ten years near Delhi in India. He has recently started writing about the architectural projects that catch his imagination. Architects: Enzo Eusebiarchitects–Nothing Studio The firm Nothing Studio signs the Opificio Salpi, a cutting-edge project characterized by high quality standards and a strong sensitivity towards nature, both values are at the foundation of Enzo Eusebi’s design philosophy.
In the industrial area of Preci, near Perugia, the architect Enzo Eusebi signs a project of more than 7000 square meters which fits intelligently in the panorama of the Umbrian country side,at the base of a hill that hides a third of the building. The spaces dedicated to the production cycle of a not able prosciutto Factory, Salpi, are within an in a C shaped underground structure, covered with a green roof that respects the natural contour of the slope. In the courtyard at the center of the C, opened to the valley, a tank of rain water is positioned. The main side of the Opificio is characterized formally and architecturally by the presence of the directional building, with the wise use of environmentally friendly materials with high energy efficiency. The concept reinterprets in a contemporary way the “block” type layout, where the ground floor dedicated to the production harmoniously blends into the smaller area of the directional building, through the intelligent use of materials. In the case of the production building, the above ground parts “multiply” the space surrounding the factory through the use of mirror finishes, taking advantage of the illusory dimension of such material multiplier of reality. The same surface will ensure the right amount of natural light to the work areas. The project proposes a sits major point of focus, besides the well-being of its users, the sustainability strongly visible in the assets in term sof energy and water efficiency, material selection, site management of the project, innovation and environmental quality. The adoption of sustainable practices in building design allows you to achieve environmental benefits, economic and social positive effect son all users of the Opificio, including owners and workers. The thread that underlies the whole project is the desire to design a building that uses construction techniques associated with the energy savings and sustain able architecture from which the formal choices are made.In this regard it was decided to adopt the philosophy and LEED construction standards, carrying out a project with environmental sustainability criteria can minimize or eliminate negative environmental impacts through a conscious choice of practical design, construction and operational improvements compared those commonly in use. Particular care was used in choosing the green roof of the building, more than 7000 square meters of natural waterproofing, designed to allow energy and economic benefits on several fronts: enhanced thermal insulation in summer and winter, peakr eduction of water runoff, reduction no is epollution, mitigating the micro climate, attachment of fine particles and saving costs of clean cover. In addition, the mantle that will replicate the hill profile, will be planted with a regular grid citrus that will benefit from the residual heat from the production area. A specific management and storage system of rain water then guarantees the reduction of waste water and the demand for drinking water. As for reducing the environmental impact and cost associated with the use of energy from fossil fuels, the new building has 50 photo voltaic modules and 10 solar collectors for on-site production of renew able energy. The combination of design choices and architectural standards, blend modern with traditional, focusing on a real sustainability are the foundation elements to achieve the LEED certification, today considered the most advanced in the international field. Profile Enzo Eusebi + Partners PROFILE ENZO EUSEBI + Partners, atelier of architecture, planning, interior, design and graphics, was founded in 2000 by Enzo Eusebi. From the beginning the studio grew rapidly, developing significant projects in different sectors: residential and receptive buildings, offices, showrooms and retail spaces, museums, production sites, temporary installations, exhibitions, renovations and private houses. Aside from the architectural design,Nothing Studio supports also the research in different fields of design, from marketing, through graphics, illuminating engineering, design furniture, up to the creation of temporary installations, making the multidisciplinary attitude one of its points of strenght. The research, at the base of the design of the Studio, is wide and heterogeneous and it mainly focuses on the functional and spacial aspects, construction technology, design methodologies and quality control butalso on problemssuchas energy saving and environmental sustainability.
