MAYER H. and Partner, Architekten is proud to announce that we have won the competition for the new tram station in Freiburg, Germany. After presenting the project to the citizens of the City of Freiburg in March, completion is scheduled for approximately end 2018.
A new tram stop with a café will be built on Friedrichring at the edge of Freiburg’s historical district. The roof’s distinctive shape forms a striking contrast to other structures in the square, creating an attractive space for users of the city’s local transport and other visitors to the city center. Upon historical triangular ground the curved roof shape emerges from a circular pattern. The stop’s construction enhances the inner-city square, adding new appeal for Freiburg residents and visitors alike. The combined effect of the nearby Siegesdenkmal (“victory monument”), tram stop with pavilion and surrounding buildings creates a strong impression, offering a powerful entry to Freiburg’s historic district.
The pavilion is a lightweight and sustainable construction featuring a slightly sloped wooden roof on a steel structure. The café walls are planned of reinforced concrete and support the majority of the load; filigree supports carry the roof. The pavilion can be partially prefabricated.
