Article source: Richardson Architects This barn was constructed in the early 1900’s adjacent to the old NW Pacific Railroad right-of-way. Although, it once was a horse stable, It has been used as a garage and guest house until recently when it sustained significant damage from burst water pipes.
The renovation includes a seismic upgrade, flood proofing as well as a reconfiguration of the upstairs living unit, with two bedrooms and a sleeping loft. The design concept opened up the ceiling to expose the roof trusses, some of which needed to be replaced due to dry rot and seismic stability. A kitchen/bathroom woodclad “service cube” was inserted into the resultant volume. The grey floorboards are a modern take on the typical barn flooring. The end design maintains the historic exterior while updating the interior for today’s modern living standards. Whimsical schoolhouse lighting reminiscent of an earlier era add scale to the space.
