Article source: Mustard Architects Nooks and crevices permeate and define the extension and refurbishment of this terraced Victorian home. Through a series of structural alterations this property was extended and opened out to form a series of elegant, open plan and light filled spaces conceived as a series of nooks from the scale of a room down to the home for a favourite bowl.
The previous layout of the house was enclosed, dark and disconnected between the rooms and from the garden, our clients asked us to redress the situation. Connection, natural light and long views through the house to our clients much loved garden also formed key brief criteria. Long framed views of the garden were achieved through the house and from the entrance through oversized ash framed door and windows. The kitchen was designed as a gallery for our clients eclectic cookware collection in line with their desire to treat the pots, pans, plates and utensils as decoration within the space. The project experiments with materials combining stainless steel, birch faced plywood, grey colour through mdf, cement tiles and a cast in-situ concrete kitchen bench at critical junctions in the kitchen. Outside the small extension and interventions are subtle and in harmony with the character of the Victorian home. To keep limit costs, we retained and re-used as much of the existing building as possible and added high levels of insulation to the floor and walls and triple glazing to the roof light to help maintain a thermally stable home.
