Located in Melbourne’s leafy suburb of Ivanhoe, this once traditional family home has been transformed by the Studio into a modern interpretation of a Hamptons’ style of living – an aesthetic that combines a relaxed sophistication with airy elegant living.

Our client’s brief was to create a modern light-filled home that encouraged their love for entertaining and casual living. To meet their requirements, we designed a spacious open-plan home that embraced the abundance of natural light, to not only make it welcoming but also visually impressive and highly functional.

Challenged with the home’s original enclosed layout that segregated the family, the Studio was able to create an open interior through extensive rezoning and expansion of the footprint.  Retaining the integrity of the home, we removed the walls between the kitchen and living space, in addition to installing structural beams. This formed a bulkhead opening, which connected the two areas, encouraging movement between different sections of the home.

The clean white lines of the kitchen, paired with the generous Calcutta marble island bench and its contrasting black American Oak joinery now forms the heart of the home.  To keep the kitchen free of clutter, we introduced an adjoining butler’s pantry designed to conceal appliances and meal prep. We also integrated extensive overhead storage and lower level drawers with custom black handles. These add a unique design element and an increased level of functionality to the space. Thonet bar stools with natural socks complimented by low hanging pendant lights add a sense of intimacy and warmth to the kitchen, making it perfect for entertaining.

The living and dining area have been redefined with our vision for a crisp white palette. Soaring shuttered windows for that hint of Hampton’s style are beautifully contrasted with dark Oak floorboards that seamlessly link all the living spaces as one.  Responding to our client’s brief to create open and airy spaces, the living area and kitchen are now unified by the central Bluestone fireplace that accentuates the laid-back elegant style. Carefully considered details have created a relaxing sanctuary, inviting the homeowners to spend more family time together.

A sweeping staircase in a dramatic contrast of dark American Oak and white tones act as a gesture of sophistication and grandeur. This leads through the passageways into the guest bathroom, which echoes the design language of the Calcutta marble and black American Oak joinery with a soft subtle touch of greenery.

Showcasing the Studio’s ability in bespoke design and manufacturing, we custom made both the breakfast and dining table in solid American Oak.  Tasked with adding the finishing touches to the interior, we styled the home with the Studio’s nestling coffee tables in marble and black American Oak as a way of combining all the homes finer details.

What was once a segmented, apathetic space has been transformed and redefined into an open airy and highly functional family home with a modern Hampton’s feel. In line with the client’s brief, this Ivanhoe property is a stunning example of a home striking the perfect balance between functionality and style.
