Article source: Arhipolis Architects University Campus programs are implemented in the 70-s residential area on the east part of the town of Split. Originally master plan is brought defining infrastructural corridors and plots for the new university developments. On the each plot specific program is defined by the masterplan , followed b y architectural competition.
All winning projects defined building as a freestanding object on the plot with minimum distance to public corridors. Project of the students residence deals with the missing link in the Campus. We consider that there is no public social open space in the Campus open spaces. Therefore, the Residency building concept primary creates this missing link- students social public space. In the Mediterranean area, because of climate, open spaces can be used most of the year, so they represent a kind of inhabitants “living room”. One of the main issues was creating public spaces of the complex. They are counterpart to the privacy of the student rooms and function as “living room” for those “sleeping rooms”. Exchange plaza – is represented by three – dimensional curved surface – public square which is shortcut between campus center and town. -area for exchange of ideas, thoughts, feelings, knowledge, information… Action plaza -is represented by horizontal surface, on and under which, are sports activities (basketball, volleyball, etc.) concentrated. -area for physical activity. The building is in the moving in phase. Only by presence of usersstudents, all design objectives will be checked and fulfill. This means that open spaces will be used in numerous new and exiting ways, not aware in the design process, all visual connections will have its meaning, contributing in creating unique social experience of the students who live in residence and those just participating in this spectacle of social and sport life. The residence is not only for students. It will serve as urban hub for the near by residential neighborhood and the surrounding. This will trigger urban social interchange and create new forms of social intercourse. Similar processes as in traditional Mediterranean cities. In this project, we as an architects, have been mediators between different public groups who will use this spaces. At the same time tried to achieve new values of the urban public and semi-public space. Contact Arhipolis Architects
