Article source: DP6 architecture studio The town of Emmen lies surrounded by flat agricultural country. Visitors entering Emmen from the southwest find themselves abruptly hitting the town centre with practically no transition. At this point a new multiplex cinema is to be constructed to form an entrance to the town. From the N364, motorists approach the building from its most dramatic angle, with the sloping undersides of the movie theatres floating above an expanse of water.
The Emmen cinema complex contains 7 theatres with a total of 1250 seats as well as cafes and bars. The theatres are spacious and steeply sloped to provide optimum viewing conditions. The theatres have been efficiently arranged in a single row so the projection rooms are all on one level. All the non-daylight functions are accommodated in an enclosed volume with a close-fitting skin. Between this volume and the ground floor are the open-space entrance lobby, cafes, bars, and foyers. Differences in level of the site and the varying theatre sizes have been exploited to the full to optimise the layout of the building. Visitors enter the building below the smaller theatres. Bars are on the right. Visitors then follow a diagonal route bordered by the larger theatres and the embankment, leading to the foyer. This is where tickets-only zone starts, looking out over the N364 and with access to the larger theatres. A staircase leads to the upper level, from which walkways lead to the smaller theatres. The exits of the movie theatres are at the screen end. At the end of the performance visitors pass through an area with diffused lighting before re-entering the fully illuminated lobby. The cinema building adjoins a sunken car park, which during the day provides parking space for the Noorderdierenpark zoo. The facades of the building will be finished with white polyester plaster. The volume will be lighted with varying colours and projections to create a cinematic effect. Contact DP6 architecture studio
