Article source: Absolut Custom Glass Systems The brief from the client was to create a fresh, resort style family home. Due to the warm climate, the extraordinary amount of sunny days on the Gold Coast and the property’s location on the regions Riviera it was important to spread as much of the living area to outside as possible. At the same time, it was just as important to blend the outdoor and the internal area together with the extensive use of toughened clear glass. Glass pool fencing helps to create a true resort style residence whilst not compromising on the intimacy that the owner should feel with their home. The house looks out over the waterway system that attracts so many people to the area, making it possible to park your car out the front of the house and have your boat docked in the backyard. The river system is a network of waterways that link the entire region together and, for most small boats, allows access to the ocean.
For this reason, it was paramount that none of the spectacular views of the water visible from most parts of the house were interrupted by opaque building structures. Glass played an integral part of this design allowing natural light and the azure of the sky to flow through the house from end to end. Located so close to the Pacific Ocean only marine grade stainless steel fittings were used on the glass installation to ensure their longevity for both function and aesthetics. From years of experience Absolut Custom Glass Systems prefers to use all fittings that are in the polished steel style, limiting the penetration of salt into the metal, and adds aesthetically to the overall clean look. Due to some onerous safety laws in Australia because of the high proportion of houses with swimming pools in their backyard, there is no avoiding the fact that all residential swimming pools must be fenced. Glass pool fencing and balustrading has experienced a boom in this region with more and more property owners looking for a solution that doesn’t impede their view or their homes beauty. This is why Absolut Custom Glass Systems were consulted, through the use of toughened glass panels to maximise the open plan feel to the home whilst being careful not to compromise on privacy. The extensive use of glass throughout the residence adds to the openness and free flow of air and light all the way from the rear, looking over the water through to the open living and kitchen zones. Using 12mm thick toughened glass for all the staircase balustrades internally allowed the resort style ambience from outside to gracefully enter the more personal parts of the house.
