The new complex is characterized by the use of highly innovative materials with a wooden construction system characterized by a high degree of insulation for walls, floors and roof. Even the windows are made in such a way as to minimize energy losses while ventilation is ensured by a system able to exchange indoor air every 30 minutes with heat recover. This new school is therefore a building that can produce more energy than it consumes, also thanks to the presence of photovoltaic panels on the roof of the gym.

Seismic safety and energy efficiency were priorities for the Administration: a challenge that involves not only the school building system in Parma, but that’s a mastering subject at national level in the field of evolution for urban and building design. With regard to energy policies, Parma has joined, on the European level, the Covenant of Mayors and adopted PAES – Plan of Action for sustainable energy – that fixes the challenges for the 2020 at a continental level with the 20% cut of GHG, energy need and the 20% improvement in energy efficiency. These are the challenges accepted by the City of Parma with a series of actions, within different levels of the administration, from urban to investment planning and interventions on the municipal assets.

“New Racagni – said the Mayor Federico Pizzarotti – is a safe school, built with antiseismic systems, and it’s almost a passive building. Today – he said addressing the children – you find yourself in a more beautiful and safer environment, with people who care about your future”.

The designer Gianluca Perottoni called almost miraculous the timing of work realization, which is “much more than a school, it’s a civic center, built with innovative criteria, predominantly in wood with a robust coat. With its 5.000 square meters, it’s a half football field.”
