Article source: Campos Costa Arquitetos The extension of the Lisbon Oceanarium is a complex challenge. It beholds an intervention in a consolidated and dynamic public space. One of the aims is to bring together the relationship between the existing Building, that has a strong presence in the architectural imaginary of the Lisbon citizens, a space currently being qualified as an Architectural heritage.
The challenge is creating a building that is not only an isolated architectural piece but that also responds the existing urban problems and enters into a comfortable dialogue with the existing building, without overshadowing it. The idea of leaving the surrounding public space free of any visual obstacle was one of the main premises in the search for a suitable location, as the square/plaza in front of the existing building functions today in a effective and pleasant way. It is one of the most active spaces in the Parque das Nações, catalysing a passing public and a waiting place for the great number visitors to the Oceanarium. This Project by no means wants to interfere or impose itself on the existing urban space, on the contrary it wishes to expand its existing properties by proposing an elevated volume that serves as a roof for a new public square, now a covered one. The architectural proposal by PCC is sensitive to the existing building, without appearing detached or estranged. A slight inclined distance grounds the Project avoiding substantial changes to the existing building, creating in this way a stimulating dialectic between the projected construction by Peter Chermayeff in 1998 and the new proposal. The proposal results in a contained irregular prism, that joins the existing support building, functioning as a counterpoint and a volumetric complementarity to the Oceanarium Building (aquarium on the dock). In the adjacent zone with the existing building it removes itself through two oblique planes the allow a dialogue and the breath in the relation between the two architectures. The East and west fronts, are the ones with the closest relation with the square and confining public space and maintain the geometry and alignments of the existing building. This is the new entrance to the Lisbon Oceanarium, where the distribution and circulation occupy over 1/3 of the buildings total area, the stairs become an essential architectural element, with a marking presence, through a spatiality, built on differences between the head rooms, along a central space with triple head room. The PCC building – for the temporary exhibitions room, auditorium and public services – connects through a linear bridge to the Access lobby of the Lisbon Oceanarium, resulting in this passage, as the single and unique moment of connection between the two architectural interventions. It being a recurrent theme in PCC’s investigative practice, there exists here, also the preoccupation of creating architecture that can combine the aesthetic demands with good performances at the sustainability level. The formal solution to the building’s facade, functional distribution and implementation, wish to respond effectively to the thermal issues, passively, permitting energetic gains in the heating and cooling of the building.
