Aedas gives the MOKO mall in Hong Kong a refreshed look

MOKO, situated at Mongkok East in Hong Kong is a focal node connecting the mass transit railway, bus terminal, pedestrian footbridge and a hotel. As part of a mixed-use development, this shopping mall was constructed decades ago. Aedas refurbished it to meet nowadays retail needs and injected new energy to the dense neighbourhood.

To improve the existing layout and circulation, Aedas strategically transformed the atrium into an elegant form and extended it to the northern part of the mall, allowing shoppers to locate themselves easily in the mall as well as drawing people flow to the north. By realigning the circulation, the atrium has become the focal point of the architecture and a connection hub. The new addition of express escalator directs traffic to the second retail level and significantly alleviates the crowding problem on the first retail level where people always pass by on their way to and from the railway station, while at the same time, maximising the commercial value of the second retail level.

Completed in eight phases while the mall maintained in operation, the refurbishment took inspirations from the nature. Delicate touches of trees, leaves, petals, river, cloud and stars can be seen at every corner. The use of indoor greenery and natural material like timber enhances the nature feel. The new design demonstrates a harmonious mix of nature and metropolitan.
