The brief was to transform this neglected, very badly distributed apartment into an attractive holiday home.
The property is located in an extremely central street, right between Plaza Catalunya y Plaza Universitat, on the sixth floor of an art nouveau building.
Nonetheless, this last floor was built in the ’60 and lacked of the charm of the rest of the building.
After 30 years in a turn-of-the-century Porfirian villa, the contemporary art gallery OMR decided to move to a new location. The design strategy was to preserve the existing brutalist building as much as possible, adjusting some interior details so as to bring out the character of the building and transform it into a generous exhibition space. A vertical one story extension accommodates all back-of-house functions. The result is a sober project that amplifies the character of the original building whilst preparing it for a new cultural life without resorting to the international conventions of the sterile white cube.
The Ussher Library in Trinity College is a landmark building for Dublin. The project – initiated as an international architectural competition design collaboration with KMD Architecture, Dublin – provides 750 undergraduate reader places and space for 350,00 volumes in a state-of-the-art library building with exposed boardmarked concrete and granite finishes. The concept established three prismatic sculptural blocks on a podium set North-South across the site; the two longer blocks are connected by an atrium. The taller is closed and stone-clad and dedicated to book storage (a tower of books), the other, lower, more dynamically shaped in stone and glass – contains reading rooms with views over College Park; the third block is for a Book Conservation Laboratory. Each block is served by a core at one end which anchors the plan; each is designed as a solid planar element without advance or recession – the line of stone cladding is carried through into the atrium in timber panelling; the atrium glazing is perceived as a separate shard-like element, while the Conservation Block roof is an origami -like folded plane of glass and metal. The new building forms a functional unit with the existing Berkeley and Lecky libraries – all three are connected under podium level and the Berkeley Library has been retained as the main entrance to the whole complex – a new staircase descends from it to a new orientation space serving all three. The library had to fit into a very strong urban context, standing on an edge condition between Trinity and Dublin; it keeps to the grid of the College buildings while recognising the line of Nassau Street. The building is like a gateway – three books forming open space between them which frame views and routes from the city into the College. By its shape and location on the site, the project establishes two strongly configured urban spaces at podium level – one against the rere of the Berkeley, open at the corners in the Trinity manner, with generous steps from the Park and Library square- the other between the Ussher Library and the street.
The land is situated close to a small village in the East Cantons. It runs at a steep gradient into a small valley enclosed by a wooded slope in the distance. The view is spectacular, showcasing a rural landscape. The visual and ecological quality of the site must be preserved and developed as far as possible.
House L project derives from the need to create a new connection for the rooms of an existing house in Valle de Bravo, in a very beautiful natural environment. So far, some romos were accessed through other rooms and why the owners did not feel comfortable to invite friends because they could not offer them privacy.
The initial project also included a new two-story independent volume, which functioned as an apartment with a living room, bedroom, bathroom and kitchenette.
La spiaggia di Sesto is a project for a sport complex designed by Archilea architecture, Renato Pucci architect in collaboration with arch. Giovanni Carignani and arch. Maria Nieddu.
Located in the countryside of Capannori (Italy), near the ancient city of Lucca and in a fantastic natural scenery the new sport center project was elaborated to blend harmoniously with its natural surrounding, drawing inspiration from the traditional architecture and the natural landscape of the region.
In 2019, Danish capital Copenhagen will have a new Metro City Ring. A new House of Food Culture is to be built on top of one of the new metro stations, located on the prominent and historic avenue of Frederiksberg Allé. The project is designed by Danish architects COBE as one of four partners of the winning team in a competition. Danish NRE Group will build the project. The investors for the project are Union Holding and NRE Denmark, and Arne Elkjær is the engineer.
The project is the result of a developer competition organised by the City of Frederiksberg and Realdania By and Byg Foundation. The House of Food Culture will be built on top of the entrance to the coming metro station. With an estimated daily flow of 10,000 people, it will be one of the capital’s new central meeting places and a focal point for urban life.
B.L.U.E. Architecture Studio is an office that fully takes the advantage of natural environment. We renovated the second level of this red brick building which used to be a residential building for an old factory. We used a wall that’s made of red bricks to separate office and meeting room into 2 semi-‐closed space. The circle opening on the wall not only takes away the intense feeling generated by eye contact, but also makes the act of passing items more convenient.
We designed an area for both exhibition and storage on the entire interior wall; and a liner light bulb at top of the wall that knits the whole space into one unit.
The Karlovac freshwater aquarium is located on a site of a planned campsite by the river Korana. The building volume is partially dug into the ground and covered with earthen embankments from its outer edges. The design concept was inspired by the city’s historic center “Karlovac star” surrounded by “Šanci” – defensive earthen walls and mounds. The goal was to form a new city focal point on the right side of Korana River, to validate the promenade and make a new tourist attraction. A public square area is defined by the aquarium building surrounding it. The main pedestrian routes intercept it in three main directions: western towards the city center and the promenade, southern towards the neighboring polyvalent area used for concerts and eastern towards the main road approach and the stadium. The aquarium facilities are hidden around the square without disturbing the natural Korana valley.

The Swedish city of Piteå, located about 130 kms below the Arctic Circle, wanted a new parking garage but also got a sledding hill, an amphitheater and a large lantern. The project ‘Stadsberget’ (Swedish for ‘city mountain’) was designed by White Arkitekter in cooperation with Henning Larsen Architects and has become a unique meeting place and tourist attraction in the city centre.
