“coniwa” is a cooperative housing residence, located in the suburbs of western Tokyo.
It consists of eleven dwellings arranged around a lush courtyard, which is covered by a wooden boardwalk. In this project the clients were initially provided with a constructive and architectural framework, in which the plan was designed according to the individuals’ requests.
In the first design phase, while laying out the building’s framework, the dwellings were carefully oriented to have a favourable orientation towards the south. This side is usually preferred in Japanese residences, developing the design this orientation was architecturally augmented through a structure with elliptical arches that allows for wide openings and panoramic views.
The process that lead to the refinement of the design of each individual residence also lead to the definition of volumes and spans changing on every floor. Utilising the arched load-bearing structure this variation maintains a unanimous architectural expression and consistency.
At the end of the second design phase, when all the dwellings were completed, the variation of the frames became the main aesthetic feature of the project, defining and characterising both the exterior façades and the interior spaces. Thus the building expresses a modern utilitarianism whilst relying on a classical structural element; the arch.
Each dwelling is positioned to face the unique, rich outdoor spaces that feature terraces with wooden boardwalks and luscious green gardens: a true oases for the inhabitants that provides serenity and privacy in daily use. The central courtyard connects these spaces, providing a comfortable and welcoming common place for the occasional shared use by the residents.
