School Jean-Monnet Broons in Brittany, France by Dietrich | Untertrifaller and Colas Durand ArchitectesFebruary 17th, 2017 by Sumit Singhal
Article source: Dietrich | Untertrifaller The Jean Monnet secondary school for around 600 students lies north of Broons, a 3000-resident town in Brittany, and is considered one of the most important educational facilities in the region. The design by Dietrich | Untertrifaller Architekten and the French firm CDA (Colas Durand Architectes) reflects the concept of a modern school. Light wood, robust exposed concrete, a fresh red color and lots of glass characterize the warm, open atmosphere of the interior. The natural and untreated materials also pay tribute to local building traditions. The reinforced concrete design of the ground floor features a Breton stone facade, while the two-story classroom section in a mixed timber and concrete construction is covered with strips of wood. The clear and structured spatial organization facilitates an ideal workflow.
The linear, horizontal emphasis of the block-shaped, wood-covered building structure contrasts with the verticality of the interiors, which plays with different heights, lighting designs, intersecting passages and multi-layered sightlines. The cafeteria section connects to the three-story school building at a right angle and has a green flat roof that softly transitions towards the lawn. All levels are connected visually and functionally. The ground floor of the school section houses the functional spaces for all classes, such as event rooms, library and administration. The 16 classrooms and 9 specialized classes are on the two top floors and are exposed to daylight from at least two sides. The three-story auditorium, naturally illuminated through its set of skylights, is at the center of the building. Intersected by numerous bridges and stairs, it offers panoramic and linear views across the various floors, providing clarity and orientation. The same bright and open atmosphere prevails in the classrooms. Large, horizontally divided windows with automatically controlled exterior shades open up the spaces. Clear strips of windows at the children’s eye level enable a wide view of the surrounding fields and meadows. The compact building shape, high-quality insulation, optimal orientation and natural lighting result in excellent energy values and satisfy the Passive Building Standard. The school in Broons was awarded the Prix d’Architecture de Bretagne in 2016. Opened in 2015, the school in Broons, Brittany, is one of the first of now six projects by Dietrich | Untertrifaller Architekten in France. The Sports Center in Longvic (2013-2015), Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Art (ENSA) in Nancy (2013-2016), the Strasbourg Convention Centre (2013-2016) and another sports center in the urban expansion area Bon Lait in Lyon (2014-2016) were created almost at the same time. After winning a competition in 2015, the firm is currently constructing a school in Lamballe, Brittany. |
