Article source: Arch. Esther Tattoli Andria, Apulian city in expansion, will be equipped in 2017 with a new multi-purpose sportive center, used to practice five different sports: 5 a-side football, handball, volleyball, basketball and figure skating. The redevelopment project of the old ice rink, facility in a state of decay, was launched in 2013 and has seen an investment by the municipal administration of approximately 650000 euros. The project of the new ice rink has been entrusted to Esther Tattoli architect, helped by the engineer Michele Masciavè, while the works were awarded to the Euro Costruzioni of Naples.
The facility is located near one of the main arteries of the city, corso Italia, along the expansion axis from Andria to Barletta. The ice rink is adjacent to the Sant’Andrea Apostolo Church, one of the main points of interest of Andria. The central position of the system, combined with the proximity of religious and educational facilities, has given a strategic importance to this project for the life of the city: “It was decided to equip the urban center with a place where young people meet, a flexible and open facility, that, at the same time assumes an important aesthetic and architectural value, as identifying element in the urban context, and do not compete with the surrounding monuments,”says architect Tattoli. The coverage is composed by great segmental arches with a variable section of about 30 meters of internal light, made of trellis metal structures, connected by tubular longitudinal elements. The use of tubular in steel, brings to mind the great architectures of the late ‘800, which had characterized the post-industrial revolution in England. About the project, the architect Esther Tattoli adds “In the direction of the pre-existing gallery, the three main interior arches are interrupted, cut by iron pillars, that fold, accepting the load. The detailed study of the pillar has allowed us to reconcile the architectural requirements with high levels of performance and security, giving birth to a streamlined structure, which integrates with the shapes of the coverage. The central pillars frame the existing terraces, while the arches seem to envelop the building, with their curved shapes, which overlap the curves of the walls. The ground has been replaced by a pavement in epoxy resin, material suitable to the practice of the five sports disciplines. It was also provided a PVC coverage in order to carry out the activities in every season, although the structure is open. The common support spaces, locker rooms and showers were equipped to be usable by people with disabilities, as required by CONI. In addition to being a project conceived and designed to be in complete harmony with the urban landscape of the city of Andria, the new ice rink is also a jewel in the crown of the city from the point of view of environmental sustainability: old projectors in fact, have been replaced with LED ones, respecting the environment.
