“Pavilion in Silverhurst” in Cape Town, South Africa by Mira Architects

The pavilion is a free standing building in addition to a property in Constantia, Cape Town as an entertainment space, guests accommodation, and a car collector’s garage & show room.

The existing main house in the property is an iconic residence by well-known local architects. Part of our brief was to continue with the architectural language of the existing building. We reinterpreted the existing architecture in the use of similar proportions, structural frame and materials.

The site and surrounds are beautifully landscaped and the presence of massive old trees makes the environment very special. The new building establishes a volumetric dialogue with the ‘forest like’ garden.

The building faces north, towards the view of a lush green belt in close proximity. The design unveils the main views and creates reflective surfaces that extend the experience of being in this landscaped setting inside and outside.

The access to the building is on the first floor at road level. The car show room has a continuous shop front glass façade overlooking the green belt. The entrance hall is visually connected to the car show room. The stairs design provides with an effective transition from the car show room to a home environment. The lower level is defined by a lounge, dining room and kitchen followed by two guest bedrooms on each side of the main space. A butler’s room and equipment & service area also exists in this level with separate independent entrances from the back of the pavilion. All these rooms open up to an internal landscaped courtyard that provides extra light and ventilation, featuring a green wall that complements the outside landscaping right in the heart of the interior.
