Article source: Chaukor Studio Introduction National War Memorial has been conceived by the Government of India to honour the memory of all the soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for the country. The Memorial is envisaged in the heart of the national capital of India, New Delhi and lies in the close vicinity of India Gate.
War memorials depict a remembrance of the past events and the sacrifices that individuals make for the greater good. Sajeev Smaark (Living Memorial) not only commemorates the bravery and valour of the fallen souls but emphasises on the significance of eternal life and immortality of the martyred soldiers. This belief of eternal life is depicted with a tree of life (kalpvriksha) that protects and nurtures all life forms around it. The ‘tree of life’ as an element incarnates the memory of the soldiers who dedicated and laid down their lives for the nation and its independence and makes it immortal not only in our minds but until eternity. Design Elements of Immortality The elements that represent the eternal nature of life are planned along the central axis that connects the centre of India Gate. This is done to further strengthen the principle idea of immortality that forms the very essence of the memorial. The central axis connects the Flame of the immortal soldier (Amar Jawan Jyoti) beneath India Gate, the central Chattri and the Pool of Contemplation (Manan Dhara). Capital of Courage(Veer Stambh) To commemorate the sacrifice of the Indian soldiers, individual and articulated capitals are formed as against the idea of a singular commemorative monument. The physical form of the capitals is an interpretation of the National Emblem with the lions representing bravery and courage of the Indian soldiers. As the capitals stand together, the overall portrayal is that of unity that reinforces the notion: “Individuals standing strong together in Unity”. Pool of Contemplation (Manan Dhara) The Pool is formed as a space of peaceful thought; a place where visitors can reflect upon the incidences that took place in the past and meditate in peace. The water body is planned at the center forming a large open public square for the people to congregate. Contact Chaukor Studio
