Article source: The Architectural Design and Research Institute of Harbin Institute of Technology Back Ground Information Northeast Asian Culture and Art Museum Complex, with the land used for its construction in Changchun Airport Economic Development Zone, close to Longjia International Airport, is Jilin Province’s important window towards the world. The base is located on the south bank of Longze Lake, facing the Conference and Exhibition Center, the Conference Center and the Urban Planning Exhibition Hall on the north bank. The completion of this project has a catalytic role in the formation of Northeast Asian political, economic, financial, commercial and trade and cultural “CBD” around Longze Lake. The design of the project is based on the image requirement that Northeast Asian Culture and Art Museum Complex should be constructed from an international prospective, the regional characteristics of Changchun Airport and the functional properties of the cultural cluster, with the “Snowfield Flagship and Culture Carrier” design concept put forward, the museum complex positioned as an international modern culture pilot cluster featuring multinational fusion.
Design Concept The planning layout, with the waterfront length increase and rational land use as the starting point, focuses on the redesign of the existing base shape, with an “Aircraft Carrier” shape contour abstracted under the premise of ensuring the unchanged area of the base (37 hectares), with three major land areas for the “Anchor Port“, “Culture Carrier” and “Floating Island on Water” formed through the cove of the waters. The “Culture Carrier” anchored at Changchun Airport can not only elevate the cultural connotation of the program design but also provide with the airport with a distinctive bird’s eye view, thereby enhancing the identification of the culture area. The integration of Northeast Asian Culture and Art Museum Complex is intended to guarantee the coordination of Longze Lake building clusters, with Northeast Asian Performing Arts Center with the largest body mass arranged on the western end of the base, the Art Center with the sense of sculptural beauty arranged on the eastern end of the base, echoing the existing Hubei Conference and Exhibition Center and the Conference Center on the north bank of the lake, forming the landmark controlling the lake surface. Utilizing the “Anchor Port”, the business service center and the entrance square of Northeast Asian Culture and Art Museum Complex will be arranged, forming a cluster regional landmark facing the main urban roads. Youth Activity Center, Changchun New Area Library and Archives and Northeast Asian Folklore Museum, which have general public culture attributes, will be arranged in the middle of the base, with a curved belt-shape connecting corridor utilized to connect the three independent buildings with similar regular body mass. The indoor connecting corridor can not only provide comfort in winter but also contribute to a sense of rhythm in the middle of the base and create a form intent of a “Ship’s Bow”. In terms of architectural image, a simple white body mass is used as the motif, with a light and floating modeling reflecting ultimate skills to express a tranquil and elegant cultural atmosphere, the geographical characteristics of ice and snow fields and the simple and smart epoch feature of modern architecture and to highlight the unique charm of a culture building cluster.
