The central section of the northeastern and southwestern facade line of the podium building of the health care facility is retracted 20 m inwards in a concave manner to produce an inviting form at the entrance. The podium building contours having folds resembling the skirts of the whirling dervishes is placed by being gradated backwards from the facade line towards southeastern direction to produce pyramid-like affect along 3 floors. The ground floor, 1st floor, 2nd floor and the 3rd floor of the hospital contained excessively crowded space groups due to the intensity of the architectural program requirements, revealing monolithic floor plans of 60 m x 40 m dimensions formed by indoors areas varying in the range of approximately 3000 – 4000 m².

As the central sections of the private hospital became distanced from the facades, the natural sunlight is conveyed to the spaces located in the middle of the building by constructing 2 inner courtyards of 8m x 10m dimensions. The architectural design is shaped to minimize the in-hospital traffic during the visit of outpatients. Therefore, the opportunities offered by the land are forced to the most possible extent at 2nd basement floor, 1st basement floor, ground floor, 1st floor and 2nd floor levels in order to create large spaces enabling vertical circulation of the outpatients at the podium building. The vertical circulation shaft of the split tower building is designed to have minimum impact from the outpatient and outpatient relative traffic.

The exterior contours of the basement floors are expanded up to the land building berthing limit, thus achieving the broadest plan contours that the land can offer. Spaces that do not require natural light (surgery room, clinical laboratory, radiology laboratory, nuclear oncology, central sterilization, etc.) are designed at the basement floors of the private hospital. The electrical and mechanical infrastructures, which are considered to be the most significant elements of the health care facilities, and the auxiliary units required by such spaces and the laundry, men’s changing room, women’s changing room, storage and workshops, morgue, waste management, etc., considered to be important servicing units of the hospital, are again positioned at the 2nd basement floor and 3rd basement floor. The parking lots, another space group that does not require natural light, are also positioned at the 2nd and 3rd basement floors. The inpatient services are generally positioned at the tower building. Some of the policlinics with no available space at the lower levels of the podium building and the social units such as staff residence, day nursery, etc. thought to be positioned at tranquil places and some of the technical support units are also allocated in the tower building.

The staircase and elevator cores that provide vertical circulation at the hospital are approached in three main groups; northern, eastern and southwestern cores. The northern core is intended to ensure vertical circulation of the podium building comprising of total six floors as 3 basement floors, ground floor and 2 floors in a manner to connect the emergency unit, radiology, intensive care units and surgery rooms. Similarly, the eastern core is also designed to serve the podium building and interconnect the mess hall, conference hall and the policlinics. The southwestern core is the largest core and is intended to serve mainly to the inpatient services located at the tower building. All cores are connected to the indoors parking lot and fulfill the requirements of the fire regulation. The fire safety of the building is enhanced by designing additional fire escape stairs at eastern and western ends of the tower building.

The building terminates at + 65 altitude and the overall height of the building reaches up to 80 m. In this manner, the building falls under the scope of relevant regulation concerning high – rise buildings. In the course of layout, the design is made talking into consideration the environmental impact, impact on the silhouette of the city, the geological structure of the land, the aerial traffic at the location of the building, general transportation and fire department access at that particular region of the city, infrastructure connections and capacities, sunlight angles and prevalent wind direction. As the building is classified as high – rise building, extra measurements are required besides prerequisite fire measures. The fire measures are consummated by constructing emergency elevator, horizontal evacuation zones and fire compartments in the building. The eastern wing of the multistory block located far from the road, extending in east – west direction and having an arch-like shape is designed to have 4 additional floors than the western wing closer to the road in order to create a broad open space and volume at the road side of the building by gradation from the road altitude towards the podium building, from the podium building towards east wing of the tower building, and from east wing of the tower building towards the west wing of the tower building.

The space so generated is organized to have outdoors parking lots, pedestrian roads, emergency entrance, main entrance to the building, dialysis center entrance, emergency unit exits, and the ramp leading to the indoors parking lot. The convex facade of the high – rise building faces Yeni Istanbul Avenue, which is characterized as a main artery. It is planned to take measure by application of double facade taking into consideration the fact that this façade shall have excessive impact from the noise and traffic of the city. The concave and convex facades of the multistory building are designed to have both thermal and acoustic isolation by means of a secondary façade, allowing for an air pocket of 60 cm. By virtue of these facades, it will be ensured that the response of the building shall be under control during severe winter conditions of Konya where terrestrial climate prevails and where temperature differences up to 20 degrees are experienced between daytime and nighttime.

The porcelain tile sidings, the curtain walling system composed of tempered and laminated glazing used at the facades, the compact laminated curtain walling elements used at the parapets and the thermal and water isolation the foregoing accommodates under their structure shall ensure adequate response of the building against the severe climate of Konya. We believe that Mevlana University Training and Research Hospital building considered having a significant impact on the silhouette of Konya shall have an eloquent contribution to the architecture of the city with its curved and soft contours.

Mevlana University Training and Research Hospital project start – up date is May 2008 and the preliminary project of the private hospital is delivered in July 2009. The architectural final project, static project, electrical project and mechanical project of the private health care facility are completed in March 2010.
