38 Beams, served as the temporary pavilion housing the Collectors Lounge for the tenth edition of Design Miami/ Miami Beach. With 38 Beams, Olson Kundig aimed to bring a northwest sensibility to this international event, by sourcing fashion, music, lighting, furniture and other design elements from makers and purveyors based in the Pacific Northwest.

The pavilion’s name was derived from the thirty-eight salvaged glulam beams that made up the structure. The structure was developed in collaboration with Spearhead, a digital fabrication company specializing in wood products.

The glulams were originally formed using wood from the Douglas fir forests of the northwest, and salvaged from a mid-century building in Los Angeles. After Design Miami/, the beams—each approximately 15×30 inches around, and up to 30 feet in length—went on to find new life with Studio 804, a University of Kansas design-build teaching program that creates affordable buildings in communities of need.

The 38 Beams structure was complemented by specially commissioned and curated design elements within the space, ranging from a light tube chandelier by LILIENTHAL|ZAMORA to the apparel worn by the hostesses, supplied by Seattle-based design and fashion retail house Totokaelo. Over the course of the fair, the space hosted Designing Miami: Celebrating Ten Years a portraiture project conceived for the space, for which photographer Gesi Schilling documented the design-world figures that passed through the lounge. Music was provided by northwest music label, Sub Pop Records.
